Prevention and Treatments is the heart and soul of Children’s Dentistry Castle Hill. Your child will see one of our caring dentists every appointment, whether for a check-up, radiographs, fluoride treatment, or fissure sealants.
Fluoride is an effective treatment to prevent and stabilize tooth decay. Our unique therapies allow the use of small amounts of concentrated fluoride in a targeted manner. This reduces the total body exposure and increasing the efficacy of the treatment.
We are also unique in that we use fluoride in different modalities. This will depend on what we are trying to achieve, i.e., stabilizing decay, strengthening a new tooth, or a whole mouth treatment.
Some teeth, namely the molar teeth, develop with deep grooves and pits in the top and side surfaces of the tooth. These grooves and pits are ideal places for the plaque to sit and hard places for the toothbrush to get to. A fissure sealant is a white coating over these grooves to prevent the food from trapping and prevent decay through these surfaces. Fissure sealants on permanent teeth have been shown to reduce the risk of decay by 80% (Journal of ADA 2016).
At Children’s Dentistry Castle Hill, we favour a conservative approach to treating teeth. We will exhaust all restorative options for a tooth before removal. Decay may sometimes be so extensive that it reaches the nerve or pulp chamber, causing discomfort and pain. To save the tooth, a pulpotomy may be recommended. A pulpotomy involves the removal of the inflamed nerve tissue and placement of a medicated dressing to prevent further infection.
